His son, Tommy, took his own life in 2020. A tribute to their son's life was published by his parents. "I'm not going to lose my son at the end of 2020 and lose my country and my republic in 2021," he said.
Some of Raskin's Democratic colleagues came to his defense when a clip of Gaetz's comments was posted on social media.
Rep Raskin is a better congressman than most of us. He's going to be remembered by history. Tommy was a testament to his parents' love.
Gaetz had a bad haircut and was a feat of mediocrity. A lot of people like my hair and my suits are cheap. It's not sorry.
Jerry Nadler of New York said that Rep. Raskin is an American hero. Matt Gaetz should try to be as kind and patriotic as Mr. Raskin is.
A representative for Raskin didn't reply immediately.
