The Golden State Warriors built a dynasty based on movement, passing and creativity. Down 2-1 and desperate for a win on hostile ground in Boston, the Warriors displayed precious little of that choreography, but managed to eke out a rugged107-97 win to knot the NBA Finals as the series returns to San Francisco for Game 5 on Monday. The show is on ABC For a team that shares the ball, the Warriors relied heavily on Stephen Curry. The two-time Most Valuable Player was brilliant. Against the NBA's top ranked defense that has zeroed in on the game's most celebrated shooter, Curry found the smallest pockets of space against the Celtics' pick-and-roll coverage to launch looping shots from long distance. He scored 43 points on 14-for-26 shooting, including 7-for-14 from beyond the line and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. In 41 minutes, the smallest starter grabbed 10 boards. During their run, the Warriors have featured a lot of firepower, but they haven't been able to find consistent shot creation outside of Curry's exploits. Curry has had to rely on a more traditional pick-and-roll game in order to maximize his shots. Curry worked hard off the dribble in isolation against the Celtics' defense in the fourth game of the series. Game 4 was a great example of both volume and timeliness. His step-back 3-pointer gave the Warriors a six-point lead and silenced the rowdy Garden crowd. Curry made seven 3-pointers in Friday's game. Ray Allen is the only other player in NBA history to have more than one. Game 4 was his second-highest output in a Finals game, and the first time a guard has recorded a 40-point, 10-rebound line in a Finals game. When the Celtics trapped Curry off a screen from Green, the Warriors were able to make a gem from their patented formula. As he's done countless times during this era, Curry sent a pass over the double-team to an open Green, who found Looney for a high-low pass that pushed the team's lead to five points. The Celtics and Warriors are in a 2-2 tie for the NBA title. The action can be seen on ABC and in the app. The fifth game is Monday at 9 p.m. The time is at GS.
Game 6: Thursday, 9 p.m. ET, at BOS
Game 7: June 19, 8 p.m. ET, at GS*
It's possible that it's necessary.
The Celtics, who led for most of the game, looked as if they'd get a long-awaited signature performance from Jayson Tatum, who entered the game averaging 22 points over the first three games. Both Jaylen Brown and Tatum were aggressive with their play. In the fourth quarter, the Celtics couldn't convert opportunities, as they fell to 28-19. The Warriors ended the game on a 17-3 run after they missed seven of their final eight shots.
The Warriors' time capsule didn't include Game 4 because it wasn't something that would fit in. Green was on the bench for a long time in the fourth quarter. Klay Thompson sank a key 3-pointer late, but he still struggles to find and make looks. Porter was a swingman. He couldn't generate the timely offense that he'd provided in previous playoffs. The team that won the title with the pass had 20 overall assists.
The Warriors will return to San Francisco as the series favorite for the first time in a week, even though they're not perfect. Curry makes you forget about what isn't there and celebrate what is.
