The Buffalo Sabres acquired goalie Ben Bishop in a trade with the Dallas Stars on Friday in a salary cap related paperwork move.

The Sabres added the final year of Bishop's contract to boost their payroll closer to the minimum. Buffalo was projected to be under the cap floor before acquiring Bishop.

The Stars freed Bishop's salary from their books by acquiring future considerations from Buffalo.

The 35-year-old Bishop hasn't played in a long time.

Bishop said his career was over in December after 212 years of dealing with an injury. After giving up eight goals in a minor league rehabilitation stint, the decision was made.

He had surgery to repair a torn meniscus after he injured it during the playoffs. The cartilage in the knee had worn away and the pain persisted the next year.

Bishop, who is from Denver and grew up playing hockey in St. Louis, said it was difficult to get out there and still feel good in some of the practices. It's difficult when your knee says you can't.

In the second-round of the 2020 playoffs, Bishop allowed four goals on 19 shots in a 6-3 loss to Colorado.

Bishop's record is split between five teams over the course of 11 seasons. He played for five different teams.

Bishop was the leader in the NHL with a 2.06 goals- against average.

The Blues selected Bishop in the third round of the 2005 draft.
