Frenkie de Jong playing for the Netherlands against Wales
De Jong made his 42nd international appearance for the Netherlands against Wales this week

Barcelona have been contacted by Manchester United.

It is thought that the ideal fit for the new United manager is the Dutch player.

United sources are adamant that they will not over pay for the 25-year-old.

The Dutch international joined Barcelona on a five-year contract after reaching the semi-finals of the European Championship.

After joining the Spanish giants in the summer of 2020 he scored 13 goals in 140 appearances and helped them win the cup.

He scored four goals and claimed five assists.

The most important area to strengthen this summer is the central area.

United is short of numbers in that area because of the exits of three key players.

It has been obvious for a while that the club does not have the personnel to compete in that area.

Given that United failed to qualify for the playoffs, it's not yet known how much of a priority the move will be.

If United can't get the deal they want, they will walk away.

It is difficult to imagine United failing to complete their first transfer of the new era following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
