Del Rio defends tweets about Jan. 6 hearings (0:54)

Jack Del Rio is a commander. It was :54.

Jack Del Rio was fined $100,000 by the Washington Commanders after he referred to the events at the U.S. Capitol as a "dustup".

Ron Rivera said he met with Del Rio on Friday to express his disappointment in the comments.

Rivera said that his comments do not reflect the organization's views and are very sad. The Capitol incident on January 6, 2021, was an act of domestic terrorism. The Capitol building was damaged when a group of citizens tried to overturn the election results.

Rivera said that the fine money would be donated to the memorial fund. Five police officers serving at the Capitol died in the days and weeks after the Capitol riot.

The Commanders will begin their mandatory three-day mini camp on Tuesday and Del Rio will address them.

On Wednesday, Del Rio defended his reply to a question about why the summer of riots, loot, burning and the destruction of personal property is not discussed.

Del Rio believes there are two standards being applied and that he is just expressing his opinion. Del Rio called the U.S. Capitol invasion a "dustup" when he was asked about it at his news conference.

"Referencing that situation as a dust-up was irresponsible and negligent and I apologize," he said. I stand by my words. While also expressing my support for peaceful protest in our country.

Rivera said that Del Rio's words hurt a lot of people in the community.

The organization will not tolerate any equivalency between those who demanded justice in the wake of George Floyd's murder and those who tried to topple the government. He will have a better understanding of our team's values after we talked this morning.

The Virginia General Assembly tabled a vote on whether to help fund a stadium for the Commanders. The decision was easier because of Del Rio's comments, according to some state senators.

The NAACP president called for Del Rio to be fired because of his statements.

His comments were offensive and ignorant. An attempted coup on January 6th was not a "dust-up". On a daily basis we learn how close our democracy was to autocracy. It is twisted to say that the insurrection is different from the nationwide protests that followed a public lynching. It's not possible to coach a majority Black team while turning your back on the Black community. It's time for you to take a break.

Sources close to some defensive players don't think there will be a division. A source close to Chase Young said Del Rio was his guy, while Jon Allen said he didn't care about Del Rio's opinion as long as he showed up and worked hard. That's what my defenseman wants.

Del Rio said he would meet with players who had an issue with what he said.

The first public hearing was held by the House committee. "previously unseen material" about what the committee discovered in the course of a 10-month investigation are included in the six hearings.

Beyond the backlash created by Del Rio's comments, the Commanders are also dealing with congressional investigations into the team owner. The National Football League fined the team $10 million after finding a toxic workplace culture. In February, the league opened another investigation after a new allegation.

There are allegations of financial improprieties by the Commanders that are being looked into by the attorney generals. The team denied the accusations.

Two years ago, Del Rio caused a stir by telling someone who didn't know he supported Donald Trump, "I'm 100% for America, if you're not you can kiss my a$$." His relationship with players wasn't damaged by it.

"Anything that I ever say or write, I'd be comfortable saying or writing in front of everyone that I work with," Del Rio said. We can express ourselves as Americans. I love this country and I believe in what I say. Some people get offended by it every now and then.
