This Friday, I have good news for you. The covid testing requirement for entry into the US via air travel will be lifted this weekend, according to CNN.
The move is expected go into effect for US-bound air travelers at midnight on Sunday. This will put the United States in line with many other countries across the world and will match the current requirements for land or sea entry. The CDC is lifting the requirement after determining it was no longer necessary “based on the science and data,” the official said (per CNN). They plan on reassessing things in 90 days and will give their recommendation at that time. If things have drastically changed by then, like a new more contagious variant causing problems, then they may recommend reinstating the requirement. This is after pressure had been mounting from the travel industry and even government officials. The general public was mostly behind dropping the requirement as well. The requirement has hindered the important tourist industry across the country for over a year now. This change is coming just in time for the crazy summer travel season. We have already seen prices out of control, cancellations piling up and planes jammed packed. Does this change add more fuel to that fire? Or, does it let the air out of the domestic travel bubble a bit since people will likely start looking at more international destinations? It will be interesting to see going forward. I did mention on this week’s podcast that Shawn would end up carrying around those tests for no reason. It appears that joke has become truth (no thanks needed), since he will no longer need the tests to come back to the US.
