Travelers bound for the United States by air, including American citizens, will no longer have to show negative coronaviruses test results before boarding flights, according to a senior administration official.

Travelers going to the US were required to have a negative test result in order to slow the spread of the fast- moving virus.

After officials at the C.D.C. determined that the widespread adoption of vaccines and treatments for Covid-19 no longer makes it a requirement, the policy will end at midnight on Sunday.

The requirement for pre-departure testing could be reintroduced if there are new concerns about another variant.

When fewer than 10 percent of Americans werevaccinated and new infections were reaching record levels, the Biden administration introduced the testing requirement in January of 2021.

The administration official stated that the C.D.C. would recommend testing for travel.
