Business success has traditionally been based on good strategy. Purpose is an essential element of doing business. Culture, the essential elements of how an organization and its employees behave, as well as its governing beliefs and principles are not present. Culture gets less attention than it deserves. The author thinks of purpose, strategy, and culture as a triangle, each angle connecting with and shapes the other two, and if one changes, the other two must evolve and adapt to maintain balance and shape. There are three types of levers companies can use to create an effective culture.
Strategy was seen as the key to success early in my career. The north star and inspiration are meant to orient the company's activities. A simple communication campaign about the company's new purpose won't do much for it on its own.
