Ángel Hernández

In the early hours of this morning, it was announced that a 29-year veteran umpire had filed a complaint against his employer, claiming that MLB had manipulated its internal umpiring metrics to make him look bad.

This is the next chapter in the discrimination lawsuit. In order to make him seem like a worse umpire than he actually is, MLB altered his season-ending reports in order to prevent him from being promoted to a crew chief.

The league has a diversity problem when it comes to hiring and promoting umpires, according to Hernndez. There is a claim that isn't necessarily true. The league had only had one minority crew chief prior to the first legal claim by Hernndez. Since then, that number has gone up. In 2020, Kerwin Danley became the first African-American crew chief in the history of the sport. He stopped working after retiring. A judge made an official statement that MLB had a "diversity issue" prior to tossing Hernndez's initial claim.

According to his recent court filing, the District Court failed to give appropriate weight to evidence of MLB's treatment of Mr. The end-of-year reports were much less flattering than the mid-year reviews that described Hernndez as one of the best umpires in Major League Baseball. It was odd that there was a discrepancy between his mid- and end-of- year reviews. Is it true?

Umpires are ranked by a number of organizations, including MLB. Umpire statistics can be found on a website, umpscorecards.com. scorecards are posted for each umpire that detail what they got wrong, how they can improve, and what their biggest errors were. When it comes to ball and strike accuracy, Hernndez is the 10th worst umpire in the league. He is one of the least consistent umpires. That is not where Major League Baseball would like their crew chiefs to be.

There are a few crew chiefs with worse numbers this year. The crew chiefs with lower accuracies are Greg and Jerry.

Both Daz and Gibson were promoted to crew chief in the past year. Hernndez has the right to be angry.

Is the baseball player the victim of malice? It's possible. There are two minority crew chiefs in Major League Baseball. There is a claim for a crew chief position based on umpire data. He has seen colleagues get promoted while he is left in the dust. Hernndez has a reputation for being a subpar umpire and having a fragile ego that shatters easily when players and/or coaches argue his calls. Maybe that is the reason he hasn't been promoted. He might be better at calling balls and strikes, but they think his temperament could be better.

The court of public opinion would have you believe that Hernndez is the worst umpire of all time. He is probably a worse umpire than he thinks, but he is not as bad as some of the umpires who have been given crew chief positions. I don't think Hernndez or Daz should be crew chiefs. Baseball needs to do a better job of promoting great umpires if they want to convince Hernndez that he isn't cut out for the job.
