"We're still optimistic about getting a deal done with DK, but we don't know if Chris will come back from his surgery," Pete said.
For different reasons, the two offensive stars did not attend this week's mini camp. While Metcalf is in line for a massive extension, he stayed away as he wasn't medically cleared. The star receiver was praised for taking part in the voluntary portion of the team's summer workouts despite his contract situation and foot surgery.
Speaking Thursday after the final practice of Seattle's three-day mandatory minicamp, he said he was hoping that he would be there and that he wasn't.
He had to make a decision. We didn't see him. He was a part of everything we had done and then he just wasn't here. He hasn't done much here, but we would love to have him with us.
He is subject to fines of more than $93,000 for missing all three days of mini camp. When asked if the team will impose those fines, he wouldn't say because he didn't want to discuss it.
Over the course of his first three seasons, Metcalf has recorded a combined 216 catches for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdown He has not missed a game since he was drafted by the Seattle. His performance has put him in line for a multi-million dollar contract.
There have been contract talks between the two sides. Big-budget extensions for under-contract players are usually not finalized until late in the summer.
"These are crucial weeks to get something done and we hope that we can work something out," he said. We intend to do that.
When asked if he's more optimistic about getting a deal done with Metcalf than he was before his mini camp no-show, he noted that the Seahawks have a strong track record of extending players they want to keep long term since he and general manager John Schneider arrived in 2010.
"I don't think I'm less hopeful, no," he said. For a long time, we've been through this. It is a difficult time. We've had a lot of high-profile guys go through this process, and how did it go for us? In time, we have figured it out. John is on it He's as experienced as you can get and he's got great representation and he's a kid. It's not possible to avoid the first time of this, the first time of what it feels like, and all of that. He is a great person. He plays a wonderful game. I don't want him to miss out on this chance because he has so much to offer. We're going to do everything we can.
He had fusion surgery on his neck in December and played in only four games. He does not have a full range of motion and was not medically cleared after an evaluation.
When doctors meet with Carson again in a couple weeks, there will be a big assessment to be done, and they will let us know where he is.
It was about 10 days ago that we visited, and we had a chance to hang out with him. "He's concerned because he wants to play and he loves the game and he's a worker, he wants to work and push and all that, and there's something that he was still a little restrained to do so he wasn't quite ready to do everything."
It's difficult on him. It's hard for our guys when they realize that there may be an end to this game. It's hard and it's true. We will love him through it and help him as much as we can if that's the case. It will happen. It's going to happen. It's too early. He knows that we are trying to fight that off. He is fighting. He wants to compete until the end and so he's doing everything he can.
Seattle's starting quarterback for the first five years of his career, was Carson. He had two of the healthiest seasons of his career in the last two years. After testing free agency and returning to Seattle on a two-year, $10.450 million contract, he is under contract through 2022.
The Seahawks drafted Ken Walker III in the second round in order to reinforce their backfield with the future of their football team uncertain.
He's one of the favorites of mine. We would love to have him back again. He is a very special player and a very special competitor. We'll keep our eyes open.
