Kevin McCarthy said on Thursday that everyone was to blame for the attack on the Capitol.
During a news conference on Capitol Hill, McCarthy was asked if he still believed that Donald Trump was to blame for the riots.
McCarthy replied that he had answered that many times. Everyone in the country has some responsibility because of what has been going on. He has claimed similar things before.
A group of Donald Trump's supporters went to the Capitol to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's victory in the Electoral College. A number of Capitol Police officers were attacked during the attack, which followed Trump holding a nearby rally and urging his fans to fight like hell.
McCarthy made a reference to the protests that took place after the police killings of Black Americans. Republicans are suggesting that the attack on the Capitol was part of a larger pattern after seeing the violence in those demonstrations.
The five Republicans wrote a letter to the Attorney General demanding to know why.
The letter says that the administration of justice with respect to certain protesters is concerning.
The certification of the Electoral College votes was objected to by three senators.
All but one of the senators who sent the letter said they were in favor of holding the rioters accountable.
Some Republicans think that the protests over racial injustice were worse than what happened in January. Jack Del Rio told reporters that he saw the images on TV. Businesses are being burned down and people are being destroyed. We are going to make a big deal out of the dust-up at the Capitol.
Despite the courts, state audits and independent investigations dismissing his election conspiracy as baseless, Trump still frames his efforts as legitimate. The events of that day were described by Trump.
The reason that people went to Washington, D.C. in large numbers was not studied by the Unselect Committee because January 6th was not mentioned. The election was rigged and the country was about to go to hell.
When asked in January if they believed Trump's claim that the election was rigged against him, a majority of Republicans said yes.
McCarthy's views would seem to have changed a lot. The New York Times reported in April that McCarthy said that Trump bears responsibility for his actions. McCarthy told Republican colleagues that Trump told him that he had some responsibility for what happened and that he should resign.
McCarthy wants to become House speaker after the elections and needs Trump's support. After the Times published audio of his comments, he admitted to it.
