An as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a young woman. It has been edited to make it clearer.

It wasn't what I wanted when I went to college. I became a seasonal worker because I wanted to live life on the road. I change jobs and towns frequently.

We live in an RV and travel around the country. We found a lot of resources for seasonal workers when we lived like this. Cool works has a lot of job postings and information.

We usually stay at a job and location for about 3 to 6 months, depending on how much we like the area

We sign a contract for a set amount of time, but the employers are usually aware if we want to leave before the end of the season.

If you find a cooler job in a better place, you need to go there. We live and work in North Carolina, where I work as a front desk clerk for a campground and my boyfriend works in groundskeeping.

I love the community we've found in fellow seasonal workers

We get to see small pieces of their culture when we meet people from all walks of life. It's a great way to live.

A lot of the other seasonal workers are retired people who had to save up money to be able to live their dream of being a seasonal worker. We both think that we should do this now. We have learned to live frugally and figure things out when it's difficult to make ends meet.

We want to live how we want. It's time to do it now. We are.

There are some downsides of seasonal work

It is hard to be away from family. I know he's going to understand when he's older because he's 8 years old.

It was a big change to live in an RV. It wasn't an easy task to find a vehicle large enough for my boyfriend who is 6-foot-5. It's important to be comfortable with your partner.

The positives outweigh the negatives and we feel like we're camping all the time. We appreciate nature and build campfires. It's incredible.

This isn't a lifestyle you live if you're hoping to make a lot of money

We want to do this as long as possible. We only worked 10 hours a week in a job we took in Arkansas this winter.

It was difficult to make ends meet. We worked in a retired missile silo, which was cool, but we ate ramen noodles for dinner a lot. It was an interesting environment to work in and we were able to make it.

When we were in South Dakota, we were 5 miles away from Mount Rushmore

We are both working 30 hours a week in North Carolina. Two lakes and a river run through the campground where we work. It is beautiful.

You might have seen the movie "Nomadland" in which we worked the sugar cane harvest. It's a dream of ours to work in a national park.

I was always interested in seasonal work, but the pandemic really pushed me to embrace this lifestyle

I was a pharmacy tech in the spring of 2020 and I didn't see my family or boyfriend very often.

I now have the chance to enjoy my life. It is nice to work in a job that is not as serious as working in a pharmacy. I have always wanted to live a nomadic lifestyle and now I am able to. Being a seasonal worker on TikTok has been great for building a community.

It takes a lot of effort to make this lifestyle work, but I love it

It's possible that your RV overheated while you tried to drive up a hill. It can take a while to find a new job.

There are ways to make it work. I'm looking forward to seeing where we go next.
