January 6, 2021, will be remembered as the day that right-wing protestors invaded the U.S. Capitol building in order to make a point about the 2020 election. While investigations by a House committee into the attack on the Capitol began almost a year ago, they will begin to communicate their findings tonight in the first of several public hearings that will be available to view online and on national television.
The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol started their investigations in July. In order to accurately piece together what happened on January 6, as well as in the months leading up to the attack, the committee has included 1000 interviews and 140,000 documents. According to the New York Times, tonight's hearing will include testimony from a Capitol police officer who was injured during the attack, and a British film maker who was documenting the actions of the Proud Boys. Video footage of top Trump aides and Trump family members will be made public tonight.
Over the next week, there are three hearings.
There could be as many as eight days of hearings by the end of June.
Tonight's hearing can be watched via live stream on the January 6th Committee's official channel on the internet. The hearing will be live streamed by PBS NewsHour, The New York Times, and the Washington Post.
The hearing will be shown on national television. CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC won't be airing their original programming tonight and will instead show the hearing on USA Today. Tucker Carlson's show will go on as planned despite Fox News not airing tonight's hearing.
The purpose of the upcoming hearing is to present a comprehensive narrative and timeline of how the insurrection began. While bits and pieces of the committee's investigation have been reported on, these upcoming hearings are an opportunity to hear the group's findings cohesively, illuminating what actually happened in the months leading up to, during, and after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
