The Congressional committee tasked with investigating the Capitol riot will hold its first public hearing in months tonight as part of a broader push to bring public attention to the committee's findings. There will be more public hearings in the month.
Initially organized as a protest and rally for former President Donald Trump, the "Save America" rally on January 6th, 2021, became a full scale attack on the Capitol building over the course of hours. More than 130 US Capitol police were injured in the chaos and four of them died by suicide. The network-wide ban on President Trump's accounts was one of the strict moderation actions taken by the speech platform.
“We will be revealing new details”
Today's hearings are likely to be a significant step towards investigating the coordination of the attack. A committee aide told NBC News that the hearing would show that the riot was the result of former President Trump trying to stay in office after he lost the election.
The hearing will be streamed on the committee's website. You can watch the stream from this page if you choose.
CNN and MSNBC will show it live. Fox News Channel won't carry the hearing, which some analysts think is part of a broader effort to downplay stories about January 6th.
The House select committee will hold a hearing at 8PM on June 9th to investigate the attack on the United States Capitol.
A documentarian who was present during the Capitol riot and a US Capitol police officer are expected to testify in the trial.
When the crowd forced its way through a barricade, he suffered a concussion and skull injury. It is not clear what the focus of his testimony will be, since he was embedded with the Proud Boys.
The hearing on behalf of the committee will be led by Reps. Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney.
The committee is expected to learn more about the involvement of the Proud Boys in the Capitol violence. Five senior Proud Boy leaders were charged with seditious conspiracy, including one member who prosecutors say broke the first window of the Capitol building to try to force entry.
