There could be further limitations on the horizon. Republicans who support restricting abortion outnumber Democrats in the state legislature, and while North Carolina's governor, a Democrat, has thus far vetoed bills to further restrict access, a Republican governor could give Republicans the edge to reach a veto-proof majority.

There is a state called California.

California is different from North Carolina. Only when the patient's life or health are at risk can the state restrict abortions after viability. Financial resources and legal protections have been promised by the California government. Most of California's neighbors will retain access. California is a great place to get an abortion for out-of-state patients because of its reputation and financial aid. According to Dunlap, Los Angeles gets about 100 patients from out of state every month. She expects that number to increase in the next five years.

Dunlap says that they have known for a long time that they play an important role in national dynamics. Clinics in Los Angeles are designed to accommodate travelers. She says that they have built an infrastructure that is flexible and able to expand and that they are aware of the politics and the communities where they are located.

The legislature of California is taking a bold stance on reproductive rights. Lawmakers are considering a package of 13 bills based on recommendations in a report. There is a bill that prohibits investigating, prosecuting, or incarcerating anyone for ending a baby's life. There is a proposal to create a California reproductive health service corps. There are two bills that protect doctors from legal action.

A government website would be created to help anyone find providers, health centers, available services, and the nearest airport. The site could be helpful for people outside of California.

There are challenges ahead.

It will be more difficult for people in low-income communities to get an abortion. The digital divide is caused by the fact that not everyone has access to computers, phones, or internet service. Some people don't know about the resources available to them. People don't know that abortion pills are available by mail. Plan C, Aid Access, Hey Jane, and Choix are independent sites where customers can order contraceptives.

Financial assistance from states and nonprofits for travel and medical expenses is something they may not know about. According to Dunlap, over four million dollars in uncompensated care was provided by the organization. It also covers flights, bus tickets, and ride sharing services. She says anything you can think of. We had a bigger budget for next year. The challenge will be getting that message out.
