A fossil discovery on an island off the south coast of England has led scientists to believe that the largest hunter in Europe was once on the island.
The remains of a huge two-legged carnivore, recently unearthed on the Isle of Wight, may be the largest theropod discovered on the continent to date.
There is only one rival, a possible megalosaurid discovered in the French Alps.
tyrannosaurs, megalosaurs, velociraptors, and spinosaurs were all part of theropods.
Spinosaurus fossils can reach epic proportions in the ancient river beds of northern Africa, with a body length of more than 50 feet and a body mass over 13 metric tons.
According to the authors, the fossils from the Isle of Wight are larger than any other Spinosaurus fossils found in southern England or southwestern Europe.
"This was a huge animal, over 10 m in length, and judging from some of the dimensions, probably represents the largest predatory dinosaur ever found in Europe," said Chris Barker from the University ofSouthampton.
It's a shame it's not known from other sources.
Spinosaurus fossils are hard to find. There are only three suspected species that have been found so far on the island.
Although it's hard to say with such limited remains, Barker and his colleagues believe their newest discovery is its own distinct species.
The bones from the dinosaur's neck are similar to those of the Spinosaurus.
The environment in which the fossils were found was similar to that of Spinosauruses. The remains of a once sandy lagoon are all that is left of the rock the fossil was buried in.
It is possible that the dinosaur was capable of swimming at the time.
There is a Spinosaurus fossil on the Isle of Wight. There is a university in the United Kingdom.
The authors have named the dinosaur ''White Rock spinosaurid'' because of the sandstone it was found in. Whether or not the remains are from a spinosaurid or another large theropod remains to be seen.
A formal scientific name hasn't been given because it's only known from fragments.
We hope that more remains will show up soon.
