Unless you know someone who is an alien, playing an alien on a TV show is almost meaningless. It could be closer to home for such a role.
Chiwetel Ejiofor talked to Stephen Colbert about finding one's "inner alien" and exploring themes and feelings of isolation on multiple personal levels.
How do you prepare to play a person who doesn't know what's going on? How do you tell the story of an alien?
Ejiofor said that you can't base it on any one thing. You have to find your inner alien if you want to play your own alien.
Sometimes I feel like an alien in my life. Colbert wondered if he had felt like an alien.
Ejiofor said that everyone had those moments when they felt like they were on the outside. Those can be big problems. One can easily understand the idea of being alien when one's family emigrates to the UK from Nigeria.
It is down to the first day at school. We all have these experiences where we've felt this way and for me, trying to play this part was just to look at all of those experiences, understand them internally, and then just try and be free with it.
The man who fell to earth is now on the air.
