Gohmert said that if government officials prayed more, mass shootings wouldn't happen.
Gohmert, who is not running for re-election in the House, made his remarks at a House session where officials voted on several gun control bills.
"Maybe if we heard more prayers from leaders of this country instead of taking God's name in vain, we wouldn't have mass killings like we didn't have before prayer was banned from schools," he said.
During Wednesday's session on the gun safety bills, Gohmert made the comments. The age limit for buying a semi-automatic weapon would be raised from 18 to 21 under a gun policy that was part of the act.
Gohmert spoke out against the Democrats' criticism of conservative efforts to block gun control measures.
"I don't think that it's very effective for the children to have people on the other side of the aisle accuse Republicans of being complicit in murder and that we put our right to kill over others' right to live," Gohmert said.
Gohmert said that Republicans can't lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent despite it being a felony crime.
