Rory McIlroy is preparing to defend his Canadian Open title this week in Toronto

The golfers playing in the inaugural Saudi-funded LIV Golf event this week are doing it for loads of cash.

According to reports, the two major players in the series have been paid hundreds of millions of dollars.

Defending his Canadian Open title is a priority for the golfer.

Everyone knows why they're playing in London this week.

It's money up front and it's a lot of money. For some guys that is really attractive.

The first tournament of the series is being held at a club near London.

The tournament has a prize fund of $25 million, with $4 million going to the winner and $120,000 for the last place in the field.

Greg Norman, the former world number one, says he has secured funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to turn the series into a 14- event league.

The leading administrators of the game have been urged to get in a room and figure it out by the Northern Ireland golfer.

Despite repeated attempts, Norman has not spoken to the commissioner of the PGA Tour.

The tour will not be distracted by rumors of other golf leagues, and the tour has threatened to ban its members who play in the LIV Golf events, a move Norman called anti-golfer, anti-fan and anti-competitive.

"I feel like the professional game was on a nice trajectory, where everything was becoming more cohesive and now it's becoming more fractured again and I don't think that's a good thing," said the golfer.

They are playing. I don't think they are thinking long term. Everyone has to do what's right for themselves.

'Would you play in Russia?' Poulter & Westwood face grilling

He admitted that he has accepted appearance fees to play at tournaments that are more important than the prize.

He said that he felt a bit flat the first few times. I didn't feel like I needed to try because I already had the money. Early on in my career, I had to learn that you have to show up and try to win the tournament.

The futures of several European players in the biennial event are in jeopardy because of their participation in this week's LIV Golf field.

Players who take part in the new series will be banned by the DP World Tour, which has a strategic alliance with thePGA Tour. The players who are not members of the European Tour are not allowed to play in the cup.

They should be able to play despite their defiance.

They have been a part of the event. It would be a shame for him not to be involved in the future, whether as a vice-captain, captain or one last time in a playing role.

He accepted that it was a weird time in pro golf and would have to see how this season plays out.
