SaquonBarkley is starting to get his swagger back. It means that at some point it was lost.
After Wednesday's mini camp practice, he said that his confidence had taken a hit.
After three injury-filled seasons, things are finally looking up.
Work on my body as I come into this mini camp. "Doing all the little things necessary to keep my body in tip top shape." You can trust your body when you have that. I think the difference is that I was more confident in college and early in my career than I was before.
I'm getting that swagger back.
It wouldn't be long before it happened. The fifth-year option on his contract will allow him to play this year.
It would have seemed impossible at one point. In his first season in the league, the second overall pick in the draft was named the offensive rookies of the year. In the last three seasons, he has had 2,391 yards.
There were three ankle injuries, a tornACL and an ankle injury last year. The star running back was still working on his knee at this time last year.
"I feel a lot better than I did a year ago," he said. I was trying to rehabilitate. My body is feeling great. My body doesn't feel weak. My strength is back. I think I have my speed back. I think I can trust my knee again. Don't think about making plays and trust me to do it.
Without that trust, he didn't perform well. In 13 games, he had 593 rushing yards. His rushing yards were less than expected.
There is a different feeling this time of year. The athletic talent that made him the second overall pick seems to have returned. The use of him all over the field reminded him of when he was at Penn State.
"The routes we are asking him to run, his quickness, his ability to get in and out of breaks, his long speed, it's all looked good."
The Giants' new offense will be built around the team's skill players.
The person is near the top. He had two touchdown catches in the first two mandatory mini camp practices.
I see a talent. He's on our team and I'm happy about it. I'm looking forward to working with him." Since I've been here, he's been great. Has been really good. We need to go out there and do it under some pressure. He has done a great job, everything we have asked him to do has been done.
The Giants' workouts end Thursday. They are off until the beginning of training camp in July.
There is more work to be done.
He said his body feels great. You have to stay on it. It's gotta go on. I need to keep pushing myself to get stronger, to get faster, and to remain healthy during the break so that I can come in at a high note for camp and the season.
It's important to be healthy in the spring. During training camp and over 17 weeks, he will need to stay healthy.
It is logical to wait and see.
"You don't want to get too high on it because it's just a mini camp," he said. "But all that little stuff and gaining confidence in here and this break that we have hopefully catapults and pushes me through camp and into the regular season and beyond
