The FBI will be sued for $1 billion by women who say they were sexually abused by a gymnastics team doctor.

The FBI mishandled allegations of sexual assaults by Larry Nassar.

Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney are Olympic gymnasts.

Nassar is serving time for molesting gymnasts.

The FBI made mistakes in its investigation of Nassar, according to the agency's own watchdog.

The US justice department's Office of the Inspector General gave a damning assessment of the agency's investigation into Nassar. The report found that the abuse continued for more than a year after the case was first opened.

Nassar's abuse was reported to the FBI in 2015, according to most of the claims in these suits. The majority of athletes were with the USA Gymnastics programme. Nassar's abuse was reported to the FBI field office, but they didn't report it or alert other authorities.

"My fellow survivors and I were betrayed by every institution that was supposed to protect us - the US Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, the FBI and now the Department of Justice."

The only way to heal and justice is through the legal process.

Two weeks ago, the US Justice Department decided against prosecuting the two FBI agents.

The total claims of the people are expected to be over $1 billion.

People who have been harmed by negligent or wrongful actions of the federal government are able to seek compensation through the Collective Administrative claims.

The FBI has six months to reply to the claims. Depending on the FBI's response, there could be lawsuits.

The FBI referred questions to the agency's director, who apologized for the FBI's handling of the Nassar investigation.
