The federal government failed to properly handle the sexual abuse allegations against hundreds of gymnasts, according to lawyers for the 90 victims of sports doctor Larry Nassar.
According to ABC News, a group of people, including gymnasts Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, have filed a series of claims against the federal government, which could lead to a billion-dollar claim.
The Inspector General of the Justice Department found that the FBI failed to respond to the Nassar allegations and made a number of errors.
According to the report, FBI agents were made aware of the abuse allegations against Nassar as early as 2015, but did not take any action to mitigate the risk to gymnasts.
A group of gymnasts filed claims against the FBI.
The FBI worked with USA Gymnastics and the USOPC to keep the information from the public. The FBI needs to be held accountable.
The FBI has not responded to a request for comment, but director Christopher Wray has previously expressed his regret for how the agency handled the allegations, which took place before his tenure as director began. The FBI's handling of the case was "inexcusable" and there were people at the agency who had their own chance to stop it.
More than 330 female gymnasts have accused Nassar of abuse, and he is currently serving a prison sentence of more than 300 years for his crimes. The gymnasts who have spoken out about the abuse they suffered from the sports doctor have sought to hold the entities that allowed him to do so accountable. The gymnasts claim for damages from the FBI comes after victims of Nassar's abuse have already secured a $500 million settlement from Michigan State University.
