Lawyers for the women who say they were sexually assaults by Larry Nassar said Wednesday that they are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI.
There is no dispute that Nassar was accused of molesting gymnasts, but the FBI failed to act, allowing him to continue to target young women and girls for more than a year.
"It's time for the FBI to be held accountable," said a national champion gymnast.
The agency has six months to reply to the claims. The FBI's response could lead to lawsuits.
According to a California law firm, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney are all Olympic gold medal winners.
"If the FBI had done its job, Nassar would have been stopped before he ever had the chance to abuse hundreds of girls, like me," said a former gymnast.
Three gymnasts said they were sexually abused by Nassar, according to the FBI. The Justice Department's inspector general said that the FBI did not open a formal investigation in Michigan.
The inspector general said that FBI agents in Los Angeles started a sexual tourism investigation against Nassar but didn't alert Michigan authorities.
Michigan State University police arrested Nassar in the fall of 2016 He worked at the school.
The assault charges against Nassar were handled by the Michigan attorney general's office. He is behind bars.
When a small amount of claims was filed in April, the FBI did not comment.
There were people at the FBI who had a chance to stop this monster and failed. At the Senate hearing, Wray said that it was unacceptable.
The Justice Department said in May that it wouldn't pursue criminal charges against former FBI agents who were accused of giving incomplete or inaccurate answers.
More than 300 women and girls who were sexually abused by Nassar will get $500 million from Michigan State. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympian Committee reached a settlement.
