Matthew McConaughey, a native of Uvalde, Texas, spoke at the White House on Tuesday about how he learned to revere the power and the capability of a gun. He told of the horror he felt at the loss of 19 school children in his hometown to a man with a high-powered rifle.
After a meeting with President Biden, Mr. McConaughey echoed the president's call for expanded background checks on gun buyers, new "red flag" laws and additional restrictions on the purchase of rifles like the one used to kill 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in U He described the horrors of gun violence in graphic detail.
The parents of the children who were killed in Uvalde, Texas, were left with no other choice but to bury them.
There will be counselors in Uvalde for a long time.
There have been more than 200 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, and the school shooting is one of the worst. There were 10 people killed at a Buffalo grocery store 10 days before the Uvalde shooting.
A group of senators are trying to negotiate new legislation to respond to gun violence. Though it was certain to fall short of some of the measures that Mr. Biden has called for, senators involved in the talks were optimistic that they could come up with some sort of legislation that would clear the chamber.
The day after the shooting, Mr. McConaughey and his wife went to Uvalde.
He said that he felt the shock in the town. You could feel the pain. Dreams are halted.
He was overcome with emotion when he spoke of meeting the parents of Alithia Ramirez, 10, who dreamed of going to art school in Paris, and how her father, Ryan, had recently secured a higher-paying job, and promised to spoil her by taking her to Sea.
The 10-year-old Maite Rodriguez had drawn a heart on the right toe to symbolize her love of nature and was wearing green hightop sneakers every day. The only clear evidence that could identify her after the shooting was the green shoes she was wearing.

He said that he met with a cosmetologist who was experienced in applying mortuary makeup. The bodies were not the same. They need more than makeup to be presentable. They needed a lot of work done. What's the reason? The large exit wounds of the rifle made it hard to open.
The man turned to politics after a short time. The news media has been accused of sensationalizing mass shootings. New regulations that the Democrats have pushed in response to the shootings were invoked multiple times.
The minimum age to purchase a rifle needs to be raised. There needs to be a wait period for those rifles. Red flag laws are needed for those who abuse them. These are practical and reasonable.
The star of films such as "Dazed and Confused" and "Dallas Buyers Club" was considering running for governor of Texas but decided against it in November.
