Residents of participating U.S. states can add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch in order to show proof of identity.
ID cards that are stored in the Wallet app will be able to be presented in certain apps. It remains to be seen which apps implement the ability to accept IDs from the wallet app.
Users will be able to present their driver's license or state ID in supported apps with a tap of a button. If the data will be stored and how long, Apple will give users an overview of it. In order for the ID card to be presented to the app, the user will need to authorize Face ID or Touch ID.
PassKit will allow developers to add support for wallet IDs to their apps.
Residents in Arizona and Maryland can add their driver's licenses to the Wallet app. Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Utah are all committed to supporting the feature.
Some states like Florida and Louisiana offer their own driver's licenses through their own apps.
The easiest way to add an ID to the wallet app is to tap the "+" button in the top right corner of the app. The feature requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later that is running watchOS 8.4 or later or an older version of the iPhone. The feature is only available in the US
In addition to using in apps, the Wallet IDs can also be used at certain airports, as shown on the sign.
In the fall, all users will be able to download the newest version of the mobile operating system.
