Is it possible for both sides to rise above? Can both sides see that we have a life preservation issue on our hands? "I told you so." We have a chance to reach for a higher ground above our political affiliations.

In the nation's capital this week, he and his wife met with congressional leaders and urged them to take action against gun violence.

Responsible gun ownership is important to us. Background checks are needed for us. He said that the minimum age to purchase a rifle needs to be raised. There needs to be a waiting period for those rifles. Red flag laws are needed for those who abuse them.

These are reasonable, practical, tactical regulations for our nation, states, communities and homes. Responsible gun owners are fed up with the abuse and hijacking of the Second Amendment. The regulations are a step forward for a civil society.

Nineteen students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde. In his speech, he said he met with the families of the victims in the wake of the attack and that he was emotional as he honored the lives lost.

"Her dream was to go to art school in Paris, and one day share her art with the world," he said as he held up a self-portrait illustration of Alithia Ramirez.

Ryan and Jessica Ramirez, Alithia's parents, told McConaughey that showing someone else Alithia's artwork would keep her alive.

At one point, he mentioned Americans' support for more gun safety laws. A majority of voters favor tougher gun laws.

The gun responsibility issue is one that we agree on more than we disagree on. It's definitely true. This should be a non-partisan issue.
