The prototype of the P2 Speeder flying motorcycle was shown off by Jetpack Aviation.
The vehicle, which it's calling an Air Utility Vehicle, features eight jet engines and is the third full scale prototype developed by Mayman.
It's a refreshing change of pace, and an indication of progress. We've been admiring the renders of the machine for a long time, but had to wait until now to see what the machine would look like.
If it ever gets a flight certification from the FAA, the final iteration will be able to lift 1000 pounds, cover 400 miles, and reach speeds of over 500 mph. The company is working with the agency to get that done.
Tim Draper, the primary investor in the company, said that the Speeder AUV is a game-changing invention. It's one of the most exciting, industry disrupting technologies we've seen and we were thrilled to provide this platform for its first public unveil.
According to its website, the company is looking at the Speeder to assist autonomously during the firefight.
JetPack Aviation is hoping to begin remote-controlled test flights later this year.
According to a press release, the P2 Speeder is built with "maximum flight efficiency and ultra-safe system redundantness." The jet engines can be adjusted to make sure the pilot doesn't spin out of control if one of them gives out.
It's exciting to see such a wild idea come to life in the form of a prototype, but getting this kind of vehicle to market will likely prove to be quite an undertaking.
We want to see it take off.
