A Washington Post story featured allegations that Burke created an abusive work environment for his players, leading to his firing by the Washington Spirit. The Chicago Red Stars coach resigned in November amid allegations that ranged from verbal abuse to jokes about players' ethnicity and religion. Dames was accused of making inappropriate sexual advances towards players when he was a youth coach.

Sally Yates was retained by the U.S. Soccer Federation to conduct an independent investigation.
