We speculated last month that the super-secret experimental spy plane follow-up to the legendary SR-71 Blackbird may have made a brief appearance in the "Top Gun" trailers.

Now that the film has been released, we can confirm that a modified variant of the mysterious conceptual SR-72 does indeed appear in the opening set piece in a manned form, and it definitely makes a bold impression.

The pre-release clips showed Maverick in a pressure suit, strapped into a futuristic aircraft that looked suspiciously like a high-altitude spy plane from the cold war.

The first flight of the SR 72 is due to take place sometime next year. When it comes to test flights, the general public doesn't get the full scoop until years later. The magic of Tinseltown allows us to see a stealthy aircraft dart across the sky at unthinkable speeds.

The production team of the movie "Top Gun: Maverick" enlisted the help of the Skunk Works to make their hypersonic plane look better on the big screen. The pilot's stick is adorned with a logo from the company.

James Taiclet, chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, confirmed to The Drive that his firm's famous Skunk Works advanced projects division helped to create the fictional spy plane.

The engineers at the legendary Skunk Works were working with the producers of "Top Gun" to bring cutting-edge, future forward technology to the big screen.

Since the $170 million film went into pre-production way back in 2017, there has been a lot of speculation about what the film will look like and what it will cost.

The movie model of the Darkstar has two inward-tilting tail fins instead of one, which is different to the concept art for the SR 72. The blind cockpit setup of the fictional Darkstar is one of the things. There could be a demonstration plane with room for a single pilot. The jet being developed is designed to reach Mach 6.

Is the Darkstar hypersonic aircraft in "Top Gun: Maverick" really a sneak peek at what the real thing will look like when the public sees it, or is it just an expensive prop?

The Mach 10 Darkstar plane was brought to life in the film but a company spokesman reminded Space.com that it is only a movie.

Darkstar is a hyper- realistic aircraft concept designed for the movie and is not real.
