  • On January 6th, Miles Taylor, a former Trump DHS official, talked about what he believed to be Trump's plan.

  • According to Taylor, Trump tried to encourage an insurrection to impose martial law and strengthen his hold on power.

  • The public hearings on the Capitol riot are set to begin this Thursday.

According to a former administration official, Donald Trump wanted to cause an insurrection on January 6, 2021, so he could impose martial law and strengthen his hold on power.

An anonymous op-ed was written by Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security official.

On January 6, when a mob of Trump supporters attacked the US Capitol and delayed Joe Biden's certification as president, he addressed what he believed to be the president's ultimate plan.

I believe Trump intended to cause an insurrection in order to make a statement about marshal law. Taylor said that he mused about using the Insurrection Act years before Jan 6th.

The Insurrection Act allows the president to deploy the military domestically if he or she deems it necessary.

The representatives for Trump did not reply immediately.

The riot erupted after the former president delivered a speech at a rally in which he said the 2020 election had been stolen from him.

The first public hearing of the House committee investigating the riot is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening. The members of the committee have said that they will present evidence of a conspiracy.

The Washington Post reported that some of Trump's allies called for him to declare martial law. According to the newspaper, the January 6 committee was looking into communications about using emergency powers.

Legal experts say that using the Insurrection Act to contest an election would be a gross violation of precedent.

The New York Times op-ed was written by Taylor after he resigned from the DHS. He published a book called "A warning" which claimed that officials discussed using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office because of his mental acuity.

The White House said the book was a work of fiction.
