In a statement Tuesday, Johnson said he has resigned from the PGA Tour and plans to play only golf tournaments on the LIV Golf circuit.

In the opening news conference for the first event of LIV Golf, Johnson announced that he was a member of the PGA Tour. Johnson said he had carefully considered the decision and felt it was the right one.

Johnson quit his membership on the tour and will play for now. It's the plan.

In February, Johnson said in a statement that he was committed to the tour, but he changed his mind.

Johnson said that he was committed to the tour at that time. The PGA Tour has done a lot for me. I've been out there for 15 years. This was the best thing for me and my family. It is exciting and new.

Johnson said he expects to be able to play in the majors. There was no indication that the USGA would try to bar players who joined the LIV Golf Tour from its championship. Johnson has an exemption into the U.S. Open for 10 years and five years into the Open Championship.

"I hope they will allow us to play, but I can't answer for the majors," Johnson said. I plan on playing even though I'm exempt for the majors.

Among active players, Johnson's 24 PGA Tour victories are the fourth most. He has made over 70 million dollars.

As players need to be members of the PGA of America to be considered, Johnson's decision likely will prevent him from playing in the future. Automatic membership is given to members of thePGA Tour. Johnson said he thought about that as well.

All things are subject to change. I'll be able to participate once it changes. It was another thing I had to think about if it does not happen. I decided to play out here.

The Ryder Cup means a lot to me. I'm proud to say I've represented my country and I hope to do it again. I don't set the rules.
