It's time to say goodbye to Monterey and hello to Ventura. The latest version of Apple's desktop operating system was unveiled this morning.

A variety of new features will be included in MacOS Ventura when it is released this fall. In September, new macOS versions are usually arriving. There's a new multitasking tool called Stage Manager that can be used with Messages, Mail, and Continuity. The final version of MacOS Ventura is only available for developers, but we have gathered all the features you can look forward to.

Is your computer compatible?

Each version of macOS is free to use. If you're wondering if your current Mac is compatible with Ventura, here's a list of all the models that will be.

  • MacBook: 2017 and later
  • MacBook Air: 2018 and later
  • MacBook Pro: 2017 and later
  • Mac Mini: 2018 and later
  • iMac: 2017 and later
  • iMac Pro: 2017 and later
  • Mac Pro: 2019 and later

Apple's new Stage Manager feature helps us stay on task by automatically organizing our open windows and apps on the left side of our screen. It keeps them out of sight behind other windows or down in the dock. Stage Manager keeps all the windows in the center of the screen. You can rearrange the size and position of the windows in your workspace. Stage Manager will keep the arrangement of windows within the group if you switch between windows.

There are useful message features.

We've all sent bad text messages, and Apple knows it. Messages can be edited or deleted up to 15 minutes after they're sent. It is possible to recover deleted texts for up to 30 days. It is possible to mark a message as unread if you have read it. Messages runs on a lot of Apple's devices, so these features will also be available on the new iPadOS 16.

There are features in the mail app.

The native Mail app in macOS is getting some improvements that will bring it in line with modern email clients. Ventura users will be able to unsend emails shortly after firing them off, and to schedule them for later in the day. Emails that haven't received a response will prompt you to follow them up. You'll get an alert if your email talks about an attachment or someone who's been CC'd but you forget to attach anything. It will be easier to search your inbox. You can find a list of your recent contacts, documents, photos, and emails by clicking on the search box in Mail.

There are shared tab groups.

It's a feature for families or workmates who plan a lot. Tab Groups will allow you to share your bookmarks with your friends. A collective list of bookmarks can be used as a landing page as well. You will be able to see what other people in your Tab Group are looking at. What could happen? Group planning and research sessions are what it is meant for. The ability to start a group Messages chat on the fly is one of the additions Apple is making.

PassKeys

You can use your phone to confirm your identity.

Passkeys is a passwordless sign-in system that Apple is teaming up with the FIDO Alliance to create. PassKeys are stored on your device and never on a web server, so they are immune to attacks. Passkeys' mechanics were given an in-depth look by Lilly Hay Newman in a story she wrote earlier this year. You can log in with the two devices talking to each other. In addition to Mac, your Passkeys will sync across all your iCloud-enabled devices. You have to sign in using your phone. The FIDO digital identity organization is part of the same group that is working on Windows and Android.

If you've ever wished you could use your phone's camera instead of your Mac's, you'll be happy to know it's coming soon. A new feature has been introduced by Apple. It's going to work outdoors. If you have a newer MacBook with an M1 or M2 processor, it will recognize your phone whenever it is nearby. Center Stage and Portrait Mode are features you can take advantage of from there. The company is planning to sell a plastic mount that snaps onto your phone so that it can be placed at the top of a MacBook's display.

There are a couple of new features that take advantage of the advanced optics of the phone. The camera will light up your face with the studio light feature. You can see your face and video of your desk at the same time with the Desk View feature. It uses the wide field of view of the ultrawide lens on the phone to pull apart the image and make two separate views. The result looks like you are using two cameras, one pointing at you and the other pointing down.

There is a handoff.

The Handoff feature in Ventura allows you to simply transfer the call to another machine if you want to. If you're on a phone call on your phone, your Mac will prompt you to move the call to your Mac, if you're nearby. It's possible to do it with a click. You can start a call on your Mac and then transfer it to your iPad oriPhone.
