Don Sweeney said that the Boston Bruins had fired Bruce Cassidy.

The position had been held by Cassidy since February of last year. Cassidy left Boston's bench with a record of over 200 victories.

In each of Cassidy's six seasons, the Bruins made the playoffs. The Boston Bruins were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Boston is looking for a new head coach.

Sweeney told Bruce Cassidy that he was making a change. It was a difficult decision after 14 years of working with Bruce. Bruce has done a great job with the Bruins organization. Bruce's head coaching record for the Bruins is impressive, and we are grateful for both his professional and personal accomplishments.

I decided that the direction of our team for both this season and beyond would benefit from a new voice after taking some time to digest everything.

The Bruins president said in a statement that he has the "utmost confidence" in Sweeney to find the best candidate to help the team reach its full potential.

The Bruins have an uncertain off-season.

Defenceman Charlie McAvoy had a left shoulder surgery in Boston last week and is expected to be out for six months. Matt Grzelcyk is expected to be out for five months after having an open-stabilization procedure.

The Bruins revealed last month that Brad Marchand will miss the start of the 2022-23 season due to hip surgery.

The captain of the Boston Bruins, who just won a record fifth Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward, is an unrestricted free agent.
