The person is Michael Le Page.
The monkeypox variant responsible for the worldwide outbreak may have been circulating in people for a long time.
There has been sustained human to human transmission since at least the beginning of the year according to an initial report by ine O'Toole and Andrew Rambaut at the University of Edinburgh.
It's more likely that the person-to-person spread of monkeypox will go undetected for a long time in Africa because it's more common in animals there.
The disease spread to Europe and beyond. Monkeypox infections have been confirmed in more than 900 people in 27 countries. Men who have sex with men are the majority of cases.
A small number of monkeypox cases in Israel, Nigeria, Singapore, and the UK were related to those found in a few other countries.
Up to 47 DNA-letter changes can be found in the latest viruses. Given that monkeypox is thought to evolve slowly, that number is surprising.
42 of the 47 changes involve the change of the letters in the alphabet. These are the kinds of changes that a group of human enzymes called APOBEC3 can make.
The report states that if the edits are indicative of replication in humans as opposed to another host species then this would confirm the emergence of a human epidemic.
On 3 June, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that there were three different monkeypox viruses that were related to the same one. Three viruses were found in people who traveled to Africa and the Middle East.
There are three cases that could be related to the virus jumping from animal to person. Monkeypox has been spreading in people in Africa since the beginning of the year due to the fact that they have lots of APOBEC3 like genes.
Not having evolved to be better at spreading in people, the existing viruses may not be as fit as the ones from last year.
The viruses that we see today are not the ones that kill the virus, but the ones that cause it to die. There may still be some that are dragging it down.
She says that we shouldn't assume that monkeypox won't be better at spreading if we give it a chance.
She says it's better for us to do what we can to make sure we don't find out the answer. The less a viruses circulates in a host, the less chance it has of being adapted.
Some researchers thought the coronaviruses wouldn't be able to evolve into different types.
She says that while the monkeypox cases so far have been mild, this might not be true if the monkeypox virus starts spreading.
"I don't think there is any reason to panic and I think we can get under control." This is something that should be taken seriously. We don't want to go the other way because we're sick of Viruses.
