A new one year contract extension has been signed by James Milner.

The 36-year-old's previous deal was due to expire at the end of this month, and he had external offers from one club and two from abroad.

Sky Sports News understands that James has accepted a reduced wage packet in order to sign a new contract that will last eight seasons.

"I'm very happy to be staying for another year," he said. I don't take playing for this club for granted.

It was the belief that I can still contribute to the team that made me feel good. I decided to extend my contract because the boss was clear about what he thought.

It's not easy to leave, as long as I'm still playing my part. Even though it didn't end as we wanted, last season was extraordinary. It will make us all hungrier for more success. That was a factor in my decision-making after the parade. The club is unique.

I'm looking forward to getting back with everyone and going again. The dressing room is a great place to be.

The deal was driven by the manager of the team who was not prepared to lose a player who made 39 appearances.

He was offered a new contract before the end of the season but decided to wait until the end of the season to make a decision.

As a result of the new contract, Milner is almost certain to surpass 300 appearances for the club next season, with 11 more to go.

The influence of their No was described by the boss as a "role model" at the club, and he went as far as to say that none of the Reds' recent achievements would have happened without it.

The German manager said that he was a role model. Nothing we have achieved in the last few years would have happened if it weren't for James Milner.

Whether he was on the pitch or not, he's set standards in a way that not a lot of people can.

What positions are Liverpool targeting this summer?

Sky Sports reporter.

The forwards will be strengthened this season. It shows how intent they are to add more quality.

It makes sense with Roberto Firmino entering the final year of his contract, as well as the potential departure of Sadio Mane, who has one year left on his contract, and the fact that Divock Origi has already decided to leave. They would only look to do business for a fee over the 30m that has been quoted and they would want a replacement sorted before they allowed him to go.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino's futures are dependent on whether or not they stay with the club. Oxlade-Chamberlain made 29 appearances in 63 games and hasn't played since the FA Cup win over Forest in March, while Minamino made just 24 appearances and both could look for more first-team opportunities. Another player with a year left on his contract is OxladeChamberlain.

While Joe Gomez is able to cover right-back and centre-back, Ibrahima Konate has another option to choose from, which doesn't seem to be a priority.
