Sullivan said that business relationships between the US and Russia have been destroyed since the invasion of Ukraine.

Business links between Russia and the US could take several years to be restored even if there is a truce on diplomatic issues.

Major American businesses have left the Russian market after the U.S. government imposed sanctions against Russia.

Sullivan worried that the US and Russia could close their embassies in each other's countries.

The ambassador warned that such a move would be a big mistake and that the two nations must preserve the ability to speak to each other.

Sullivan doesn't believe there will ever be a complete snapping of ties as both nations sit at the UN Security Council.

Sullivan said in an interview that the talks between Russia and the U.S. are unlikely to happen at the moment. Russian leaders have threatened to use nuclear weapons against the US and NATO if they intervene in the conflict.

Key Background

Putin threatened to escalate the war in Ukraine if the U.S. and its allies continued to send long-range weapons to the country. The warning came after a series of missile strikes against the Ukrainian capital on Sunday. President Joe Biden announced last week that he was sending advanced rocket systems and munitions to Ukraine. The weapons were sent to Ukraine in order to prevent them from being used to target Russia.

It will take a long time to reestablish business ties between Russia and the US.

The US ambassador told Russia not to close the embassy.
