Password manager LastPass is introducing apasswordless method to access its vault.

Users used to have to type in their master password to get into the vault. They will be able to use the company's mobile app. It is possible that this will include the option to use your phone's biometric login features, like face and fingerprints, though LastPass has not been completely clear about how this will work in practice.

“Get instant access to the accounts used every day — without ever having to enter a password”

It is important to note that your master password is not going anywhere soon. If a passwordless login attempt fails, master passwords will still be needed to register a LastPass account, add new trusted devices, make changes to an account, or type in. The hope is that this new approach will be the first step towards eliminating the master password completely.

LastPass is the only password manager that allows users to securely and easily login, manage their account credentials and get instant access to their accounts without ever having to enter a password.

Today's announcement focuses on desktop LastPass users, who currently aren't offered any biometric login options as an alternative to typing in their master password The company's mobile apps already offer facial recognition options.

The changes come a little over a year after LastPass made significant changes to its pricing structure. Free users were only allowed to access their passwords on mobile or desktop, not both. After GoTo announced plans to spin off LastPass, the company behind the service went through changes.

The press release doesn't say if the passwordless feature will be free or limited to paid users. We asked the company for clarification.
