In the aftermath of the school shooting in Ulvade, Texas where 19 students and two teachers were killed, the discussion has turned to future prevention, with some Republicans arguing for more people on school premises to be armed.

John Oliver dives into the effectiveness of police officers in schools in the newest episode of Last Week Tonight.

Oliver says in the clip above that this is happening even as students have been deprived. Fourteen million students go to school without a counselor, psychologist, or social worker, according to a recent report. Fourteen million children are in close proximity to a pair of handcuffs than they are to a mental health professional.

Oliver said there was no evidence that the presence of school resource officers lessened the severity of school shootings. Some of the negative impacts of having police officers on school grounds include an increased arrest rate of students with disabilities and a lack of national training requirements.

Oliver says school police are not the answer to school shooting. Guns are the answer to that. We fail to keep our kids safe from gun violence and we condemn them to a system that criminalises the very essence of being a child when we throw more cops into schools.
