There are ways to stop grass from growing in your flower beds while keeping your flowers alive.

How to prevent grass from growing in flower beds

Grass that grows in your flower beds can be prevented from getting in there in the first place. Some options are available.

  1. Mulch the flower beds
  2. Introduce groundcover plants, which shade the soil and acts as natural mulch
  3. Install landscaping fabric
  4. Create a barrier between the lawn and the flower bed using bricks, rocks, or metal landscape edging

How to get rid of grass growing in flower beds

There are a few ways to get rid of grass in your flower beds.

  1. Pull it out by hand

    The price is right since it is time consuming, labor intensive, and only a temporary fix.

  2. Create a sun barrier

    You can cover the grass in your flower beds with cardboard or black sheets to keep it out of the sun. You should leave it on for a month to see how it goes.

  3. Use a selective herbicide

    If you really want to use a weedkiller, make sure it's formulated to kill grass. If you don't see what type of plant the herbicide targets, look at the ingredients, they won't hurt flowers or shrubs.
