The high-flying "Top Gun" continued to soar in its second weekend, dropping just 32% from its opening with $86 million in ticket sales.

Tom Cruise reprises his role from the 1986 original in the Paramount Pictures release. It's the smallest decline for a movie that opened over 100 million dollars. The film earned Cruise's biggest opening to date.

Joseph Kosinski's film is doing well overseas. In 64 overseas markets, the film dropped only 20% in its second weekend.

Riding stellar word of mouth, terrific reviews and a global promotional tour, "Top Gun" has already grossed $548.6 million worldwide, making it easily one of the biggest hits of Cruise's career. The 59-year-old's best performer so far is the "Top Gun" sequel.

Cruise and company have been praised for leading the final push in the recovery of movie theaters, despite the fact that "Top Gun: Maverick" is unlikely to match the $1.89 billion worldwide of Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home." It was delayed for two years.

"No Way Home" had little-to-no big-budget competition through January, but "Top Gun" kicks off a string of more closely packed summer movies. Universal Pictures will release the final chapter of the dinosaur franchise on the weekend of June 14-15. Pixar's first release in more than two years will be released the week after that.

In the next week or two, "Top Gun: Maverick" will find itself in more of a dog fight for audience attention.

Over the weekend in 15 international markets, the Colin Trevorrow- directed film made over $50 million. It was the same as the previous franchise entries, according to Universal. The films "Jurassic World" and "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" both made over $1 billion in 2015.

There were no new wide releases in the U.S. and Canadian theaters. The film opened with over one million dollars in theaters.

David Cronenberg's "Crimes of the Future" opened with over one million dollars in over 700 theaters. The Canadian auteur has not made a movie in eight years.

Comscore estimates ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in the US and Canada. The final figures will be released on Monday.
