According to a report, the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards are expected to be in the market for a new player.
According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Pistons and Pacers are seen as the biggest threats to landing the Cleveland Cavaliers guard. Due to their cap situation, the Wizards would have to sign and trade Sexton.
Sexton is set to become a restricted free agent after he failed to reach a contract with the Cavs. He had a career-low 16.0 points and 2.1 assists in 11 games before tearing his knee.
The lead guard role was taken over by Darius Garland in the tournament. The acquisition of Caris LeVert in February could make it harder for the team to keep Sexton.
The Pacers and Pistons are both capable of having cap space this summer, and both are expected to be active on the guard market. A smart team could look to pounce on Sexton early before his market rises, as he is likely to be above the free-agent pecking order after a playoff performance.
There is a chance that a new contract will dwarf the one given to Sexton. It's difficult to argue that Brunson is a better player than Sexton, but recency bias and injury history will be factors.
