Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Tom Cruise is in a movie.

Paramount and Skydance

Skydance and Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick continued to impress movie goers. In its second weekend, the film earned an additional $86 million. In the summer of 2005, Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds took in $235 million in the US. Top Gun is already Tom Cruise's biggest domestic grosser. With a new global gross of $548.6 million, it is already above Bradley Cooper's American Sniper, Brad Pitt's World War Z and Cruise's own Mission: Impossible II. War of the Worlds is Cruise's fifth-biggest global grosser with a total of $600 million. It is soaring to the stars and1-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-6556 is1-65561-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556 is1-6556

It was the biggest second weekend ever for a film that opened under $174 million. Its debut Fri-Sun frame was 32% lower. That is the smallest drop for a $100 million-plus opener, just below the 33.2% drop for Shrek 2 over Memorial Day Weekend. Spider-Man dropped 37% from its $114 million debut and eventually earned $400 million domestically. It will end its run with $524 million domestically. The legs between Men in Black III and Aladdin gave Top Gun: Maverick $465 million- $560 million domestically. From this point, it would push past $415 million.

The $170 million legacy sequel, which has earned rave reviews, white-hot word of mouth, and an A+ Cinemascore, is playing like a steroid-laden, blockbuster/franchise variation on Mel Gibson's ThePassion of the Christ. Those two films played huge both to general moviegoers and those who don't usually go to the cinema for anything else. It has hit paydirt with consumers who think that all Hollywood makes are comic book movies and liberals. The film has been embraced by those who wouldn't show up, as well as Tom Cruise fans, and those who just want to see a well-oiled, non-fantastical, adult-ske.

If Top Gun: Maverick is the de-facto event movie of the summer for older moviegoers or anyone wanting a tentpole that doesn't involve superheroes or fictional hero's journeys, then Pete Mitchell is a superhero akin to Batman. There is a movie studio named Warner Bros. Between May 27 and June 24 there will be a lot of movie theaters showing Elvis' trailer. It's possible that Top Gun could pass Doctor Strange 2 to become the top domestic earner of the summer. It will be the first Memorial Day opening for Paramount since 2009, and the first for Cruise since Mission: Impossible II in 2000. I think that JAMES CAMERON is cosplaying his favorite movie.
