Who is the longest reigning British monarch? Who was the shortest ruler?

The British monarchy has existed for more than a millennium. According to Historic UK, 61 members of the royal family have occupied the throne. The relationship between these rulers and England's first king, Athelstan, is not always straight forward. Carolyn Harris is a historian at the University of Toronto.

Laura Clancy told Live Science that a lot of the history of the monarchy is about war. The War of the Roses, which lasted from 1455 to 1485, inspired George R. R. Martin's "Game ofThrones."

The British throne is up for grabs.

The shortest reigning monarch is Lady Jane Grey. Lady Jane was only a teenager when Edward VI died, and she fainted when she was told she would take his place.

Lady Jane's ascent was well planned. Her father-in-law wanted to keep Mary Tudor out of the throne. He had Mary declared illegitimate because of her Catholic faith and because her mother had fallen out of favor with King Henry VIII. He put Jane in her place. She was a part of the political battles.

Shortly after Jane was deposed, he was beheaded. Lady Jane and her husband were executed a few months later.

The establishment of the constitutional monarchy brought about the end of this bloody line of ascension. Modern monarchs have tended to live longer due to the fact that the line of succession is simpler and less violent.

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in Britain. Britain's first ever televised coronation took place on June 2,1953, when the queen assumed the throne at the age of 96. She is the third longest-reign in recorded history. The second-longest reign is that of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who ruled for a little over 70 years.

Since Elizabeth came to power, the public role of the monarchy has continued to change, as evidenced by the Royal Family's social media accounts.

Clancy and other scholars point out that the monarchy is linked to a particular strain of British nationalism and that it thrives in more traditional circles. Clancy said there was still a lot of support for them. It's caught up in ideas about what Britain is.

The Crown is seen as a relic of the past by young Britons. In a Statista poll of 5,000 British citizens, only 31% of people under the age of 24 supported the monarchy, compared with 81% of people over the age of 65. This is a notable shift from the past, according to data analytic group YouGov. It's time for the monarchy to end for some people in the U.K. Prince Charles would like to have a slimmed down royal family. It is not enough. In an article for the Guardian (opens in new tab), columnist Simon Jenkins wrote that he shouldn't bother with it anymore.

The United Kingdom will celebrate the Queen's reign in a grand way. You can watch the festivities on either ABC News or the British Broadcasting Corporation.
