According to a report from The New York Times, Apple is working with Hollywood directors to create video content for its upcoming augmented reality and virtual reality headsets. Sources familiar with the matter told the Times that Jon Favreau is just one of the directors involved, he is tasked with delivering a mixed reality experience based on Prehistoric Planet, the dinosaur filled Apple TV Plus series he produced.

It looks like we won't be able to immerse ourselves in a landscape like that anytime soon. According to the New York Times, Apple's headset might not launch until at least 2023 due to issues with battery life and performance. The New York Times reports that some employees left the company over the implications of the headset on how people interact with one another.

The headset may not make an appearance at Apple’s annual WWDC

Apple may shift its focus to software instead of the mixed reality device at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. Sources told the NYT that Apple is about to introduce a toolkit for developers that will allow them to add camera and voice functions to their apps.

Apple hasn't confirmed the existence of the headset, but the device will likely be capable of offering both virtual reality experiences and virtual overlays made to look like they're part of the real world Various leaks and rumors give us a lot to chew on, from its form factor to its processing power.

There are indications that the device may be ready for an official announcement. RealityOS is the name of the operating system that will be used in the headset. Apple's board of directors were given the chance to try out the mixed reality headset.
