Blue Origin has five crewed flights under its belt.
Jeff Bezos' company sent six people to suborbital space today, acing its fifth human spaceflight mission.
At 9:25 a.m., the action began. Blue Origin's facility in West Texas is about 25 miles from the town of Van Horn.
After just over 10 minutes, the New Shepard capsule and its six passengers touched down in the desert.
Blue Origin's mission is referred to.
New Shepard has a rocket and capsule that can be used again and again. The booster comes down shortly before the capsule does, making powered vertical landings.
The 21st flight for Blue Origin and New Shepard was today. The company has had two crewed flights this year, the first being on March 31st.
Three crewed New Shepard flights took place last year. One of the crewmates was Evan Dick. He was the first ever repeat New Shepard passenger.
The capsule communicator was used to read messages from the crew. Charlie Duke, who flew on the Apollo 16 mission 50 years ago, sat in mission control before the flight to wish the crew well.
Duke said that he was about to embark on the plane.
He said that he did an exciting adventure 50 years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing you when you return. God speed.
The youngest American woman to reach space, and the first Mexican-born woman to do so, were two of the many firsts that came from crewmemberKatya Echazarreta.
Echazarreta's seat was sponsored by a non profit organization that wants to expand our access to space. She's the first person to go to the final frontier. Citizen astronauts are expected to help implement the positive aspects of the overview effect, the perspective shift that results from seeing our planet from above.
The other four passengers were civil production engineer Victor Hespanha, who became the second Brazilian to reach space, Jaison Robinson, who was a finalist on the TV show "survivor: Samoa", and a company called Dream Variations.
In our crewmembers story, you can read more about them.
Like Echazarreta, Correa Hespanha flew on someone else's dime, and his seat was sponsored by the CSD. Blue Origin has not said how much the other four passengers had to pay.
The company's main rival in the space tourism industry, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, currently charges $450,000 for a seat on its space plane. It has flown to space four times but hasn't carried paying customers. The vehicle that will be used for commercial passenger operations is expected to be ready for use in early 2023.
Blue Origin delayed the launch of NS-21 because of a possible issue with one of New Shepard's backups.
