The movie Morbius will be returning to theaters in July. It only came out two months ago, but the film starredJared Leto as the eponymous Doctor Michael Morbius. At the time, the box office reflected that better superhero movies also do as well, and that's a good thing. The meme of the film becoming a meme on social media has been ruined by Leto and Sony trying to get in on the joke.
Leto posted a video of himself looking over a script. The title page is shown after the person pretended to hide it. Whenever the film is brought up on social media, the phrase "It's Morbin' Time" has become a memetic phrase. It, along with the film having a tie-in game on last and current-gen consoles, are two of the bigger meme related to the film.
Leto's video isn't really funny. It would have been funnier if he had said something before Sony confirmed the movie would be in theaters. He could have done some extra VO for the trailer. The bigger issue is that it is trying to be in on the joke in a way that makes it sound like a dad is talking to his kids. If he posted his own Morbius fan cam, it would have been even worse. The film does a better job of being self-awareness than the social media site.
The meme is usually funny after the subject acknowledges them. This is the reason why Sony decided to re-release the film. It is possible that Sony knows they are being made fun of and swinging for the fences. When the film comes out on July 1, we will see how that works out for them. It isn't Morbin's time until then. While it lasted, it was enjoyable.
