The oldest Chinese restaurant in Japan, Heichinrou, is shutting down after more than a century of business.

According to Teikoku Databank, the restaurant's main branch started filing for bankruptcy due to the struggles caused by the COVID-19 epidemic.

By the end of March 2007, Heichinrou had sales of more than 8 million dollars, but by the end of March 2016 they had sales of less than 50 million dollars. The restaurant's main branch closed on May 15 due to the swine flu.

According to Teikoku Databank, due to the high cost structure and sluggish profitability, the business' performance became poor due to the slump in corporate demand. The entire business was transferred to another corporation in April 2016 with the investment of a Hong Kong fund because it did not improve.

Many tourists from Japan and other countries used to come to Heichinrou because it was close to the main gate of Chinatown.

Three of the restaurant's branches will remain open as they are managed by a different company.
