Netherlands players celebrate
The Netherlands and Belgium are in a Nations League group with Wales and Poland

The Netherlands started their Nations League campaign with a convincing win over Belgium.

Memphis Depay was the Dutch star and he scored two goals.

Steven Bergwijn opened the scoring for Spurs with a long-range strike, and the other came from a close-range tap-in.

Michy Batshuayi scored a goal for Belgium.

It was a frustrating night for Manchester United, with Timothy Castagne hitting the bar with a rising shot at the start of the second half, as well as a goal being ruled out by the video assistant referee after Batshuayi was spotted in an ineligible position.

Mertens hit the woodwork with a late shot.

It was a superb display from the Netherlands team and anything but a win would have been meaningless.

The victory was the 10th match in a row for Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.

Brilliant Dutch send ominous warning

The Netherlands lost in the last eight of Euro 2020 and failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Having survived Castagne's early strike against the woodwork, they took complete control of this Group A4 clash, aided by a clash with Nathan Ake, stripping the home side of their main attacking threat.

The way in which they carved open a weak Belgian defence was almost as impressive as the way in which they pressed from the front.

Depay will take a lot of the praise for his coolness in front of goal, but credit is also due to Bergwijn, who has not looked the part at Spurs in a long time.

With talent across the pitch and the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Teun Koopmeiners, Noa Lang and more in reserve, they could be one to watch.

Belgium looks to be running out of time if they don't take advantage of their golden generation.

When they travel to Wales in June, they will be booed from the field, the same day that the Netherlands play Poland in the other Group A4 match.
