According to the New York Times, the Secret Service agent in charge of protecting Vice President Mike Pence was warned by his chief of staff that he could be in danger on January 6 if Trump attacked him for not intervening in the election.
The only time Short voiced a security concern was when he was the chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence.
The warning came at a time when Trump was trying to get the vice president to not certify Biden as the winner of the presidential election.
A week after the Times reported that the White House Chief of Staff told colleagues that Trump seemed to approve of the Capitol riot chants, the news was not covered by the Times.
The Secret Service and a representative for the vice president did not respond to questions from Forbes.
At the end of December, Short contacted the son-in-law of the president, but he was busy with negotiations in the Middle East, according to the Times.
Giebels led Pence from the Senate chamber after the Capitol was attacked. He took the vice president to an underground dock where he wouldn't get in a car because he thought it would allow the rioters to believe they won. The Times reported that Pence waited underground for three hours to certify the election results.
In the days leading up to the Electoral College vote count, Trump used social media and personal communication with the vice president to push him to reject Biden's win. On the day before the insurrection, Trump said that the Vice President had the power to reject fraudulent electors. At the rally on January 6, Trump said, "If you're not going to stand up for the good of our country, I'm going to be very disappointed in you." The Times reported that the chief counsel was asked to write a memo detailing what his role and powers were. The aides of the vice president decided that he didn't have the power to intervene. The certification process began on January 6 and Pence issued a statement explaining that he didn't have the power to reject the votes. During the riots outside the Capitol, some Trump supporters created a makeshift gallows, as Trump said that he didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country.
The idea that anyone can choose the American president is un-American. In June 2021, the vice president defended his decision to certify the 2020 presidential election.
There are more witnesses and unseen material on the events of January 6. The findings of the investigation into the Capitol riot will be revealed in the first of several hearings next week.
The Secret Service of Security Risk to the Vice President was Warned by an aide.
It was approved by the president to hang Mike Pence. Staffers were reportedly told to chant during the Capitol Riot.
The committee will release previously unseen material next week.
