Having established himself as one of the best designated hitters in baseball over the past four seasons, Yordan Alvarez has been rewarded with a long-term contract extension from the Houston Astros.

According to Jeff Passan, a six-year, $115 million extension has been agreed to by a player whose primary position is designated hitter.

The first three years of free agency will be bought out by the deal, as well as the three years of arbitration.

The MLB minimum salary for a pre-arbitration player is 70% of the average salary.

He established residency in Haiti after defecting from Cuba. The Astros declined to sign him when he was an international free agent due to penalties incurred from giving Yuli Gurriel a five-year, $47.5 million contract.

The international free agent received a $2 million signing bonus after agreeing to a deal with the Dodgers. He was traded to the Astros for a pitcher.

The Astros called him up to the big league in June of 2019. He won the American League's Freshman of the Year after hitting 27 homers in 87 games.

In the ALCS, he hit.522/.539/.870 with five extra-base hits and was named the Most Valuable Player.

Since the start of the year, he has a slash line of.287/.372/.576 with 75 home runs.

The Astros are still one of the best teams in MLB despite some significant roster turnover in the past. The New York Yankees are the only team with a better record in the American League.
